Options available for the intensification of forage production in sub-tropical areas are contrasted. Research on the removal of inedible species, the provision of stock-drinking water, the control of stocking rate and the incor­poration of well-adapted pasture legumes should receive priority. Approaches to maintaining continuity of forage supply and legume per­sistence are discussed.
