Abstract
My parents immigrated to the United States from India in the early 1960s, and I was born in 1967. I grew up in a time where there was little awareness of Indian culture or the religion of Islam in America, and I struggled against my parents attempt to impose both on me. My writing discusses the conflict I felt between my parents’ expectations and the American culture surrounding me that I began to embrace. My thesis has two parts: Part 1 is a collection of essays that shares the theme of my life as a second generation American, and Part 2 is the beginning of a longer piece that will become my memoir.
