BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2014 aka AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH 2014
“Why the different names when it all means the same?”
- First, there was Negro History Week beginning in 1926.
- The week evolved into Black History Month in 1976.
- Public Law 99-244 made it National Black (Afro-American) History Month in 1986.
- Presidential Proclamation 6863 made it African American History Month in 1996.
- Senate Resolution 229 renamed it Black History Month in February of 1996.
- Presidential Proclamations still refer to the month as African American History Month.
- The ASALH has always used the term Black History Month.
- Black History Month is celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
