Description
"Feed planning and balancing according to standards of the energy and protein requirements" has been elaborated as an integral part of the GDR Feed Evaluation System to ensure that feed supply can be planned according to actual requirements, and has, by using computer techniques, been introduced in the GDR for planning activities at enterprise level as well as for national planning at territorial levels. The standards characterize the feed requirements encountered under average production conditions for large livestock populations and longer spans of time. They have been derived for all animal species and production objectives from the requirement standards for feeding according to the course of production; they include certain allowances to compensate differences in performance. Requirements and feed supply are subdivided into roughages (green forages and their preserved forms, straw) and concentrates and are balanced according to energy and nutrients (protein and amino acids), while simultaneously taking into consideration restricted feed intakes. The results of such balancing activities can be used to determine the feed production pattern necessary to meet requirements, the amounts of supplementary feed to be purchased, the distribution of feed at supra-enterprise level, and the efficient use of feed for animal production purposes.
