The Closure of the Gypsum Storage Pond (GSP) by Removal and Use as Fill in the Bottom Ash Pond (BAP) at the Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) Trimble Generating Station Authors Mr. Steven Turner - United States - Tetra Tech, Inc. Mr. John Williams - United States - Louisville Gas and Electric/Kentucky Utilities Mr. Jarrett Beach - United States - LG&E and KU Abstract The GSP was a 40-acre gypsum depository for two pulverized-coal-fired units with a capacity of 514 and 760 megawatts respectively at LG&E Trimble Generating Station. Approximately 1.5MM cubic yards (CY) of gypsum was deposited in the pond prior to project commencement. The GSP was used to provide fill material for the closure-in-place of the BAP, an approximately 100-acre coal ash pond. GSP closure began with dewatering in 2021, with excavation beginning in 2022. The gypsum excavated from the GSP was hauled to the BAP for use as fill material. Removal of the gypsum also included removal of the liner beneath it. Following removal, a grid was created, and each area was verified to meet cleanup levels. Filling of the BAP with Plant CCR material began in 2021. Gypsum from the GSP started being incorporated in 2022, with completion in 2024. The effected clay beneath the liner and the CCR materials in the GSP dike were also used for fill in the BAP. The GSP is being filled to grade with soil and rock from stockpiles created during the recent construction of the CCR Landfill onsite. It will soon be closed as a green field.
