Description
The agronomic performance of dwarf napiergrass (Pennisetum purpurreum) selections N75, NI 14, N127, N128 and Merkeron were compared with that of the Merker variely. The experiment was conducted at Mayaguez and Isabela, Puerto Rico (PR), at cutting intervals (CI) of 45, 65 and 85 days. The dry forage yields (DPY) of Merkeron were superior to those of the 4 dwarf selections and Merker al all CI except that of 85 days, when Merker was superior. Although the DPY of the dwarf napiergrasses compared favourably with those obtained from the best forages in PR, more uniform and higher annual yield could be obtained from them If they were converted from short-day to day-neutral plants. These grasses contain useful genes for dwarfness and leafiness and could be used to develop superior Pennisetum for the tropics.
