Abstract

“Pool Party” is part of a linked cycle following four generations of the Taylor family, who are based in Lexington, Kentucky, and the fictionalized South-Central Kentucky town of Sparks. The novella and stories span the late 1970s to the present day, and they are chiefly concerned with the ways guilt, regret, nostalgia, shame, and obligation shape the actions of people as they relate to their families and neighbors. What do we owe, and what are we entitled to? Macro and micro applications of “patient writing,” coined by the novelist Chris Bachelder, inspire the pacing and structure of this work.
