Abstract
This collection of ten short stories serves as a subversion of nostalgic “front porch” Appalachian tales, refusing to flinch from the violence and shame that comes with growing up in that unsympathetic environment. Each story explores a new relationship—a closeted transgender teen raging against his parents, boyfriend, and body; a genderless protagonist who watches their mentally ill best friend vanish into thin air; a young woman in a failed marriage, ashamed of her social class. Each protagonist is inhibited by their environment, or by their self, in one way or the other, leaving behind a feeling of profound erotic ambivalence.
