2015 Black History Month Virtual Exhibit

The 2015 Black History Exhibit is titled A Pictorial History: African American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Persons in Kentucky. The exhibit was displayed on campus in the King Library Building from February-March 2015. Sponsors were UK Special Collections Research Center, African American and Africana Studies, and the student organization Shades of Pride.

Half of the images come from various collections in UK Special Collections, while others were borrowed with permission from individuals and organizations in the general public. The exhibit timeline is from a court case in 1909 to the drag shows held at the Woodland Park Auditorium in the 1930s, known as the Negro Review, to members and activities of present day organizations such as Bluegrass Black Pride and the campus student organization Shades of Pride.

A second showing of the exhibit [plus one additional image] took place from August-September 2015 at the Lexington Public Library. Sponsors were UK Special Collections Research Center, African American and Africana Studies, the community organization Bluegrass Black Pride and JustFundKY.

This exhibit in UKnowledge is the online version of A Pictorial History: African American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Persons in Kentucky. This exhibit contains only those images were permission was given for the photo image to be displayed within UKnowledge.

This exhibit was completed by Reinette Jones with assistance from Lewis Ward, Deirdre Scaggs, and all in the Digital Lab of Special Collections Research Center.
