Rumen-fistulated cows were used to study the influence of the forage preservation technique on rumen fermentation and holdup time of the feed in the rumen. Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) preserved as wilted silage or dried green crop was fed in the following variants: wilted silage alone; wilted silage + sugar beet + protein supplement; dried green crop alone; dried green crop + sugar beet + protein supplement. As compared with dried green crop, the shares of true protein and sugar in wilted silage were reduced from 9.8 • to 6.4 '.'I􀉧 and from 7.7 to 1.8 %in DM, respectively. In comparison with dried green crop, after feeding nitrogen-equivalent wilted silage the NH3 concentration in rumen fluid rose signif­icantly from 17 to 26 and from 15 to 30 mg per 100 ml, respectively. The apparent di­gestibility of crude protein in wilted silage was found to be by 11 units lower. During the first 3 hours after feed intake, about two thirds of the dry matter eaten in wilted silage + sugar beet + protein supplement rations . disappeared from the rumen. For rations made up of dried green crop + sugar beet + protein supplement only one third of the DM amount disappeared within the same time. The results obtained should be taken into account in recommendations for NPN feeding of high-• yielding cattle. They stress the importance of increasing the production of dried feeds.
