Description
Our experimental results, which have been confirmed in practice, indicate the positive response of irrigated grasses to high nitrogen applications (600 kg a.i/ha). Czechoslovak varieties of perennial ryegrass are capable of producing hay yields of 25 t/ha and crude protein yields of about 4.0 t/ha. Under intensive irrigation (60 % of utilizable field capacity) with a Ladino clover proportion of 15-20% and nitrogen rates of 100-200 kg/ha, hay yields of some 20 t/ha and crude protein yields of more than 3.0 t/ha are obtainable. Irrigated forage plant mixtures allow to reduce the area under forage crops by 0.25 ha per standard livestock unit and to cut milk production costs by 0.30 Kcs/kg.
