In the western parts of the Ukrainian SSR, the effectiveness of mineral fertilization of cultivated pastures depends on the type of soil, the forage plant stand, and the rates of fertilizer applied. Without irrigation, nitrogen fertilization on a slightly loamy meadow soil was highly effective. The yield increment per 1 kg N applied at rates of 60-240 kg/ha was 25- 1 7 kg in the case of dry matter yields of 7.45-10.14 t/ha. On highly acid medium-loamy pseudogleyed soddy podzolic soils, cultivated pastures gave much lower dry matter yields, namely 2.06-4.27 t/ha. Nitrogen fertilization is highly effective at higher rates on bottomland grassland and at lower rates on low-bog soils. In Transcarpathia, the forage yield and nitrogen effectiveness were doubled when pastures were irrigated.
