Description

In the western parts of the Ukrainian SSR, the effectiveness of mineral fertilization of culti­vated pastures depends on the type of soil, the forage plant stand, and the rates of fertilizer applied. Without irrigation, nitrogen fertili­zation on a slightly loamy meadow soil was highly effective. The yield increment per 1 kg N applied at rates of 60-240 kg/ha was 25- 1 7 kg in the case of dry matter yields of 7.45-10.14 t/ha. On highly acid medium-loamy pseudogleyed soddy podzolic soils, cultivated pastures gave much lower dry matter yields, namely 2.06-4.27 t/ha. Nitrogen fertilization is highly effective at higher rates on bottomland grassland and at lower rates on low-bog soils. In Transcarpathia, the forage yield and nitrogen effectiveness were doubled when pastures were irrigated.
