Experiments were conducted over a period of three years to determine the effect of rising levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 120, 240, 360, 480 kg/ha) on the dry matter yields and crude protein contents of red clover (Trifolium pralense L.), alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.), clover grass (16 kg Trifolium pralense L. + 4 kg Lolium mullijlorum Lam.), Italian ryegrass (Lolium mullijlorum Lam.), and cocksfoot (Daclylis glomerala L.). The soil types in the individual locations were chernozem, loam-clay, lightly loamed sand, strongly sandy loam, and sandy loam. Nitrogen fertilization for alfalfa and red clover proved unprofitable in locations where reliable yields could be expected. In locations where no reliable yields could be expected for alfalfa, profitable yield increments were achieved on lightly loamed sand and strongly sandy loam at levels of 120 kg N/ha, and on sandy loam with amounts of up to 360 kg N/ha. In these locations clover grass fertilized with medium amounts of nitrogen and pure grass stands fertilized with high amounts of nitrogen performed best. As far as the crude protein content was concerned, high amounts of nitrogen fertilizer had little effect on legumes but a marked effect on grasses.
