Description

Permissible grazing frequency was elucidated by comparing forage plant mixtures for their response to different regimes of use, with reference being made to variation in yields and in the percentage of sown legume com­ponents in the stand. In the absence of nitro­gen-fertilized grass stands in the pasture, a mixture with white clover is recommended for five uses. For four uses it is more suitable to take mixtures with red clover or alsike clover, or with white clover as well, provided the availability of grass stands for early pasture use. Only three uses per season are permissible of alfalfa/ grass mixtures, with the first growth being cut and the other two grazed. No detrimental effect upon stand composition will result, if termination of grazing of clover/grass pastures is delayed in autumn, but forage yield will rather be increased by 400-800 feed units per hectare and autumn use will be extended by one month, if natural soil moisture is suffi­cient or irrigation available.
