Description
Tests have shown that the life duration of wild-growing birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) on natural meadows was between five and six years. That spa_n can be extended to something between eight and nine years in a seeded-grass environment. The winter hardiness of birdsfoot trefoil is poor, and so is its growth under flood water, as it would be displaced by wild-growing grasses. Its yield is higher if proper drainage is provided, with ground-water tables varying between 60 and 100 cm. About 60 % or even more birdsfoot trefoil plants may be destroyed when grown under cover crops for grain. The studies into the properties of birdsfoot trefoil have been helpful in establishing effective cultivation methods.
