Description

Cell wall constituent (CWC) percentage, in vitro cell wall constituent disappearance (IVCWCD), and crude protein percentage were determined in alfalfa herbage from plots broad­cast seeded at 4.5, 9.0, 18.0, and 36.0 kg of seed/ha. Data were obtained for the seeding year and two years following the seeding year. CWC percentage for first cutting alfalfa herbage averaged 4.2 percentage units lower than for second cutting alfalfa herbage. How­ever, IVCWCD did not differ between first and second cutting alfalfa herbage (p < 0.05). No relationships were apparent between CWC percentage and IVCWCD, which were appar­ently not affected by seeding rates. Crude pro­tein percentage of alfalfa herbage did not vary among the various seeding rates. High plant population resulting from high seeding rates did not result in increased alfalfa herbage digestibility and crude protein.
