Description
High and stable yields of perennial forage plants grown under conditions of high-intensity arable farming depend decisively on proper timing of sowing as well as on correct choice of the most suitable sowing method. Early-spring sowing of perennial forage plants under summer crops was found to be an optimum approach in the nonchernozem zone of the European part of the • USSR. The safe development of the seedlings of a given forage crop depends on proper choice not only of the species but also of the variety of the cover crop. If more nitrogen is applied, particularly in years with higher rates of precipitations, clover will be best preserved under lodging-resistant barley varieties. Joint sowing of clover with underseeds, such as winter vetch and annual ryegrass, under winter crops harvested for green fodder or early silage, has worked well in that zone. Early-spring sowing of alfalfa under summer crops has proved to be favourable as well on irrigated sites in southern regions. Maximum forage yields per unit area, however, have been obtained from sowing alfalfa under second-crop maize. Open sowing of alfalfa and sainfoin in August and in the first half of September, following the winter grain harvest, was found to be effective under conditions of irrigation and in areas with sufficient moisture. Alfalfa underseeds, after fallowing, yielded best results in the dry steppe zone of Northern Kazakhstan.
