Description
The claim that seed pre-sowing hardening treatment increases the drought tolerance and seed production of crops was investigated. The results obtained by this study confirm those findings. It was found that seeds, when soaked in tap water for 24 h and dried at room temperature until they had reached their original weight, showed a major increment in seed production and number of seeds per panicle compared with the control and hardened seeds subjected to other soaking times and the alternative method of drying. Highest seed production with 24 h soaking was found when soil fertility (fertilizer and irrigation) was satisfactory. Presowing hardening treatment also showed a higher percentage and rate of seedling emergence than the control.
