Description

The claim that seed pre-sowing hardening treat­ment increases the drought tolerance and seed production of crops was investigated. The results obtained by this study confirm those findings. It was found that seeds, when soaked in tap water for 24 h and dried at room tem­perature until they had reached their original weight, showed a major increment in seed pro­duction and number of seeds per panicle com­pared with the control and hardened seeds sub­jected to other soaking times and the alternative method of drying. Highest seed production with 24 h soaking was found when soil fertility (fertilizer and irrigation) was satisfactory. Pre­sowing hardening treatment also showed a higher percentage and rate of seedling emer­gence than the control.
