Description
There were different investigations of 12 varieties of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata), 6 of timothy (Phleum pratense), and 2 of tall oat grass (Avena elatior) in the period 1972-1975. The experiments were carried out on the mountain Jagodnja (800 m) in the south-western part of SR Serbia. The difference in heading time between the earliest variety of orchard grass and the latest variety of timothy was 43 days on average over three years of investigation. This period between the earliest and the latest varieties of orchard grass was 22-23 days, while the difference between timothy varieties amounted to 9-19 days. Both varieties of tall oat grass came into ear in the same time with the late varieties of orchard grass. The data have shown that it was possible to organize the successive utilization of green matter for animal feeding with the investigated varieties. Among the Yugoslav varieties of orchard grass and timothy there were not the earliest varieties and the period of utilization would be. significantly shorter than in this experiment. The latest varieties of orchard grass were the most productive, while the earliest varieties of this species gave the smallest yields. Among the varieties of timothy the earliest ones gave the greatest yields. There were noticed significant differences of yields between the varieties with the same time of heading in this test.
