Fly ash is an important mixture component that is used in the concrete mixture to reduce the permeability of the concrete with time. In service life modeling, there are two ways that the inclusion of fly ash can increase the predicted life – the rate of permeability reduction with time, and the length of time that permeability decreases. The results of a long-term study of concrete conductivity (which is related to permeability) of various low permeability concrete mixtures designed for use in durable structures are presented. The concretes containing fly ash are compared to those without, and demonstrate that the conductivity of the concrete with fly ash reduces more quickly with time, and that the reduction last longer. The impact of this effect on predicted service life is demonstrated using selected examples.
