Description

The future need for fly ash and other CCR’s for beneficial use purposes, following the decommissioning of fossil plants, has been well documented within the industry. Plant shutdowns will result in a market shortage for the ready-mix concrete and other industries that support key infrastructure within the U.S. In addition, CCR units are closing under the EPA CCR Rule, a process that will continue for the coming years. As part of these closure designs and planning, the potential for future harvesting of CCR’s should be considered. This presentation will focus on key design and planning activities that can begin today with the future in mind. Specific focus will be placed on adapting closure designs for harvesting, use of synthetic turf capping systems (ClosureTurf®), permit compliance criteria, water management (contact vs non-contact), excavation process and staging, interim cover systems to mitigate harvesting concerns, material conditioning, and other key considerations.
