Abstract

The downtown area of a city is often considered the economic hub where people come together as a society to engage in consumerism, recreation, and build relationships. Cities use the downtown area to showcase the beauty and appeal of the area to attract new residents or retain current residents. One thing that affects many downtown areas is the presence of visible homelessness. Homelessness is often seen as an unsightly issue that affects local businesses, residents, and tourism. Local governments can choose to push the homeless presence out of downtown or create an environment that helps those in need. This paper will explore the connection between city beautification and homeless assistance by assessing three “beautiful/desirable” cities and three “ugly/undesirable” cities.
