Description

The low nutritive status of the neotropical savannas may be improved by using a forage legume, either to supplement the savanna, or as a component of a grass-legume pasture to replace it. The two stoloniferous legumes Arachis pintoi and Desmodium ovalifolium form promising associations with various species of Brachiaria (Grof, 1985; Thomas and Grof, 1986), but there are very few data on their reaction to grazing. The relation between growth rate and the amount of leaf material is central to understanding how systems of grazing management influence plant relations. Because the palatability of the two legumes above differ, under contrasting treatments of forage allowance the amounts of leaf remaining after grazing varies throughout the year. Associations of these species were, therefore, monitored under rotational grazing to determine how these differences controlled growth rates during the rest period.
