Description
Breeding Stylosanthes for resistance to anthracnose diseases in northern Australian pastures is complicated by extensive pathogenic variation in the fungal pathogen, Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes. We have put considerable emphasis on epidemiological studies in an attempt to devise optimal strategies for the use of resistance genes in our selection and breeding programs. In addition, techniques of molecular biology are being used to investigate prospects for the use of genes from novel sources and to study the genetics of virulence in the pathogen.
