Description

Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), Australia's most important pasture legume, is a winter-growing annual which is naturally distributed around the Mediterranean region and parts of western Europe. Three subspecies (or species in some taxonomic treatments) are recognized in subterranean clover and these are represented in the Australian National collection as follows : ssp. subterraneum - 4,800 genotypes, ssp. brachycalycinum 1,500 genotypes, ssp. yanninicum - 170 genotypes. The yanninicum subspecies, despite the smallness of the collection is of special interest both ecologically and for agriculture. The ability to grow in wet situations, together with good persistence under grazing makes genotypes of this subspecies of considerable value for high winter rainfall areas, particularly where incipient waterlogging is common.
