Description

China is one of the countries in the world rich in legume. According to the research of Dr Sun-xingdong, the late herbalist, among the Chinese local genera Trifolium, there are white clover (Trifolium repens L. ), and so on; all of them number about more than ten species. White clover has a specially important place in the herbage resource in every province of South China. Chinese white clover is distributed mainly over the range of 22°-51° north latitude, 80°-130° east longitude. The range of optimal temperature for white clover is l9°-24°C, but under -15°C (minimum temperature) in winter, it is able to reach a higher over - wintering rate. High temperature is one of the limited factors in natural distribution of white clover. According to the size of leaf, white clover may be divided into three types: they are big leaf type, medium leaf type, and small leaf type. Chinese white clover can be divided into more complex ecotypes, such as thermo-resistant, cold-resistant, moist-enduring and drought-resistant, etc. Cultivation of white clover is very wide in north and south China. Recently only there provinces of Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou have sown white clover about2 0,000ha. Meanwhile some high yield models have sprung up gathering in hay by 18.75 ton/ha,in seeds by 351 kg/ha.
