Description

Livestock are a significant part of the agricultural production system of central Morocco: 1) they utilize cereal by-products (straw, chaff, weeds) and 2) they are a source of readily available cash. Money generated from livestock sales serves to support the farmer and his family and sustain cropping operations such as seeding, weed control and harvest. However, livestock output is low. Cultivated forage represents only 3 % of arable land. The question we sought to answer was whether perennial forage grasses could establish under low rainfall conditions (250-390 mm) in central Morocco. Our goal was to extend the availability of quality forage, increase production and improve flexibility of forage use, compared to cereal based systems for feeding animals.
