Description
The present taxonomy indicates that Gliricidia, with its origin in South America, consists of three species: G. sepium (Jacq.) Walp., G. maculata (HBK) Steud, and G. ehrenbergii (Schlecht) Rydb (Hugues, 1987). Gliricidia sepium is one of the shrub legume commonly used in the tropics for shade, fence, green manure, firewood and fodder (NFTA, 1987). However, it is not definitely known how its growth habit affects its utilization. The objectives of this study was to evaluate the growth of 16 provenances of Gliricidia sepium collected from 8 countries in the tropics.
