Description
The characterization of the to the production system of is a basic step within a system approach to identification of endogenous and exogenous constraints. From that knowledge applied research may be conducted or technological innovations be proposed to be tested and validated at a recommendation domain level. In the coastal area of Guatemala, Central America, several agrarian reform areas of different sizes have been established ranging from 1353 ha for the parcelamiento Santa Isabel t 39800 ha for the parcelamiento Nueva Concepcion. The total farm area varies from 15 to 20 ha and a typical tropical dual purpose bovine production system is used, i.e. milking of cows once a day with the presence of the calf which stimulates milk release and consumes milk residues. The types of animals are usually crosses of Bos indicus and B. taurus with different degrees of blood of either type. The objective of this paper is to present data obtained from diagnostic studies conducted at four settlements which led to the identification of the bovine production system constraints and the proposal of technological innovations to remove them.
