Abstract
The Public Health Accreditation Board is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that manages a series of programs including the national public health accreditation program. Public health accreditation is awarded to health departments that achieve a set of nationally recognized goals and standards for departments to adopt. The state of Ohio initiated policy requiring that Local Health Departments to achieve accreditation by 2018. In result, Ohio has the largest number of accredited local health departments. This study looked at the local health departments in Ohio responses to the National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems to understand if services provided improved as Ohio Local Health Departments achieved accreditation readiness. This study found that local health departments did see an increase in services provided as health departments became accreditation ready or accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board. It is recommended that states establish similar policy established by the state of Ohio to improve public health systems within their own states.
