File List: --SurficialMapping_2021_2022_README.txt -- this document --BigClifty.zip --BigSpring.zip --Custer.zip --Flaherty.zip --Madrid.zip --Millerstown.zip --Summit.zip --Tonieville.zip --Upton.zip --Mapping data for each of the nine quadrangles is captured in a ZIP file that contains an ESRI geodatabase and associated FGDC-compliant metadata files (.xml). The geodatabase is a relational geodatabase of spatial and non-spatial data that conforms to "GeMS (Geologic Map Schema)--a standard format for digital publication of geologic maps", available at https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. Each geodatabase is a Level 3 GeMS compliant geodatabase, and may contain the following spatial and non-spatial tables (all have the minimum required features/tables): --GeologicMap (required) -- This feature dataset may contain up to six feature classes that depict the spatial distribution of field data locations, cartographic lines, overlay polygons, geologic lines, lithologic contacts, and lithologic polygons that represent the spatial distribution of a given 7.5-minute quadrangle. --CartographicLines -- CartographicLines feature class depicts the spatial distribution of cartographic line elements used in the map project, including the complete extent of the mapping project and any included cross section lines. --ContactsAndFaults (required) -- ContactsAndFaults feature class depicts the spatial distribution of lithologic contacts delineated in the map project. --DataSources (required) -- DataSources non-spatial table provides references for the sources of the geologic map database content using a primary key that links to foreign keys in feature classes and tables. --DescriptionsOfMapUnits (required) -- DescriptionOfMapUnits non-spatial table provides descriptions of the map units, styling information for a formal description of map units, symbology information, and standardized geologic material classification of the USGS used in the map project. --FieldLocations -- FieldLocations feature class depicts the spatial distribution of field data points used in the map project, including locations of Kentucky Geological Survey field stations, oil, gas, and water well locations, and locations of geotechnical borings. Also contains depth to bedrock/surficial lithology thickness information if available. --FieldLocations__ATTACH -- attachment table containing field photos; only present if images are available. --FieldLocations__ATTACHREL -- relationship class connecting FieldLocations__ATTACH to FieldLocations feature class using RELOBJECT_ID and OBJECTID, respectively; only present if images are available. --Geochemistry -- Geochemistry non-spatial table provides new geochemical information for the map project. --Geochemistry__ATTACH -- attachment table containing XRD spectrographs; only present if images are available. --Geochemistry__ATTACHREL -- relationship class connecting Geochemistry__ATTACH to Geochemistry table using RELOBJECT_ID and OBJECTID, respectively; only present if images are available. --GeologicLines -- GeologicLines feature class depicts the spatial distribution of geologic line elements used in the map project, which includes outlines of sinkholes. --GeoMaterialDict (required) -- GeoMaterialDict non-spatial table provides standardized definitions and a hierarchy for GeoMaterial names prescribed by the GeMS database schema. Note that users of the GeMS schema do not create this table; furthermore, this table should not be modified by authors or publishers of individual maps. --Glossary (required) -- Glossary non-spatial table provides definitions for certain values used in the geologic map database using a primary key that links to foreign keys in feature classes and tables. Terminology definitions include all values in Type, ExistenceConfidence, IdentityConfidence, GeoMaterial, DepthType, SampleType, and ParagraphStyle fields. --GrainSize -- GrainSize non-spatial table provides new and existing grain size analytical information for the map project. --GrainSize__ATTACH -- attachment table containing grain size distribution plots; only present if images are available. --GrainSize__ATTACHREL -- relationship class connecting GrainSize__ATTACH to GrainSize table using RELOBJECT_ID and OBJECTID, respectively; only present if images are available. --MapUnitOverlayPolys -- MapUnitOverlayPolys feature class depicts the spatial distribution of geologic overlay polygon elements used in the map project, which includes areas of anthropogenic disturbance. --MapUnitPolys (required) -- MapUnitPolys feature class depicts the spatial distribution of lithologic polygons delineated in the map project. --SampleDescriptions -- SampleDescriptions non-spatial table provides lithologic and petrographic descriptions for samples collected for the map project. --SampleDescriptions__ATTACH -- attachment table containing smear slide photomicrographs; only present if images are available. --SampleDescriptions__ATTACHREL -- relationship class connecting SampleDescriptions__ATTACH to SampleDescriptions table using RELOBJECT_ID and OBJECTID, respectively; only present if images are available. 2. Relationship between files, if important: --FieldLocationsID fields in DepthToBedrock, Geochemistry, GrainSize, and SampleDescriptions tables are foreign keys to FieldLocations_ID field (primary key) in FieldLocations feature class --DataSourceID fields in CartographicLines, ContactsAndFaults, FieldLocations, GeologicLines, MapUnitOverlayPolys, and MapUnitPolys feature classes, and Glossary and DescriptionOfMapUnits tables are foreign keys to DataSource_ID field (primary key) in DataSources table --MapUnit field in MapUnitOverlayPolys and MapUnitPolys feature classes are foreign keys to MapUnit field (primary key) in DescriptionOfMapUnits table --Term field in Glossary table is primary key to ExistenceConfidence, IdentityConfidence, and Type fields in CartographicLines, ContactsAndFaults, FieldLocations, GeologicLines, MapUnitOverlayPolys, and MapUnitPolys feature classes, ParagraphStyle and GeoMaterialConfidence fields in DescriptionOfMapUnits table, SampleType field in SampleDescriptions table, and DepthType in DepthToBedrock table --GeoMaterial field in DescriptionOfMapUnits table is foreign key to GeoMaterial field (primary key) in GeoMaterialDict table --REL_OBJECTID fields in FieldLocations_ATTACH, Geochemistry_ATTACH, GrainSize_ATTACH, and SampleDescriptions_ATTACH attachment tables are foreign keys to OBJECTID fields (primary key) in their respective parent tables Resources>STATEMAP.stylx: --Symbol field in all feature classes corresponds to a unique symbology contained in the .stylx file 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: N/A 4. Are there multiple versions of the dataset? No METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: This map was generated using new field mapping, sample analysis, Kentucky statewide LiDAR elevation data (5-ft average horizontal spacing), aerial imagery, and data compiled from water-well logs, oil and gas records, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet geotechnical reports, and landslide inventory mapping. Field mapping was performed by Kentucky Geological Survey geologists Ann Hislop, Matthew Massey, Antonia Bottoms, and Max Hammond between September 2021 to September 2022. Samples were collected in the field then described in a Kentucky Geological Survey soil lab facility by Munsell color and petrography. Results are reported in FieldLocations feature class and SampleDescriptions table. Grain-size analysis was performed on some samples using sediment fractions of less than 2 mm with a Beckman-Coulter laser particle analyzer. All grain size information is reported using the modified Wentworth scale. Grain size data was also collected from previous geotechnical studies. All results are reported in GrainSize table. Select representative samples were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for bulk chemistry and mineralogy, respectively at the Kentucky Geological Survey geochemistry lab. XRF data is reported in relative oxide frequency; XRD data is reported by mineral and estimated relative abundance. Results are reported in Geochemistry table. All geologic data was delineated from direct field observation and/or geomorphic signatures on available elevation datasets or imagery by standard geologic interpretation. 2.
