Description
Newspaper headlines from around the world heralded Man o’ War (1917-1947) as “matchless,” the “wonder horse,” a “speed miracle,” and “peerless.”
He won 20 of his 21 races and claimed victory at the 1920 Preakness and Belmont Stakes. He was named U.S. Horse of the Year that same year.
Man o’ War retired to stud duty in Kentucky. He was the leading North American sire in 1926.
Man o’War remained a prominent Kentucky tourist attraction during his retirement years, and his funeral was broadcast live across the country.
His burial site at the Kentucky Horse Park continues to draw thousands of visitors to the Bluegrass every year.
Nearly a century after his birth, he is still ranked by many as the greatest of all American racehorses.
Man o’ War’s male line traces to the Godolphin Arabian, and his dam’s line traces to the Darley Arabian.
