Description
Storm Cat showed great promise as a 2-year-old, but his racing career ended early due to injuries. He finished first or second in seven of his eight starts in 1985.
Storm Cat claimed victory at the Young America Stakes at Meadowlands, and placed second by a nose to Tasso in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
After sustaining injuries that year, Storm Cat retired from racing to Overbrook Farm in Lexington. In his early years at stud, he commanded moderate stud fees.
As his offspring registered more wins and his sons proved successful stallions in their own right, Storm Cat’s stud fee rose to $500,000.
Storm Cat was the leading sire in North America in 1999 and 2000. As of 2013, he had sired 8 champions, 108 winners of group or graded stakes races, and 180 stakes winners around the world with earnings exceeding $125 million.
He is descended on both sides of his pedigree from the Darley Arabian. Storm Cat died at the age of 30 at Overbrook Farm. A tapestry depicting William T. Young and Storm Cat hangs in William T. Young Library atrium.
